Hispanic Education Effort

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation today announced it will give nearly $70 million in grants to aid Hispanic education efforts concentrating in New York City, New Mexico and California.

As the Hispanic community continues to grow there is no more important issue than making education available, affordable and desirable.  We need to encourage our young people to pursue education.  The foundation of a strong economy is an educated and adaptive workforce.  But to get that workforce, we must collaborate with businesses, government, local communities, teachers and parents to advance educational opportunities.

Hispanics represent a significant part of the U.S. workforce and can be seen at all levels serving in various jobs across the spectrum. The Pew Hispanic Center estimates Hispanics represent 13.6% of the total U.S. workforce in 2007.  The same study, estimates 36.7% of U.S. job growth to consist of Hispanic applicants.

"With these kinds of grants, we will be able to help more young people get through college,” said a spokesman for the Gates Foundation.   And I would add -- make America more competitive in the global economy and Hispanics even more central to the success of our country.
